Dunwich Borers Llc

Dunwich Borers LLC cared little about the people in their employ, with money being the primary concern. Railings and support beams were only set up where necessary and renovated only when they decayed to the point when they couldn't do their job properly. Workers were kept pacified by a combination of paychecks, Happy Hour events right next to the largest pit in the mine, and annual picnics.

This neglectful attitude of the company claimed lives, leading to workers falling to their deaths while under the influence or children perishing inside the excavation pit after wandering too close to the edge. The response was usually to address the symptom, not the underlying cause of the problem. For example, when a child was killed in the pit during the 2076 picnic, the company didn't bother installing railings, but simply bought an extra sentry bot to ward people away from the edge. But to the management, all of this was an acceptable sacrifice, as they had an ulterior motive at play.

The quarry was Actually the site of highly classified Military Research into a substance known as the Cloud manifested itself for the first time when the cheap ventilation system in the mines ground to a halt, the pipes backed up, spewing out the red cloud. Workers in the area started choking and vomiting. Hospitalized in the onsite clinic, the damage to their health was extensive and they were shipped of too Big Mountain for further Testing
To deal with the problem Site management ordered 100 experimental Darklight hazmat suits. Although considered creepy by the maintenance crews, they allowed crews to explore the ventilation system and try, in vain, to identify the source of the Cloud. The teams managed to find the source of the problem in the main ventilation pipe. However, traces of the dust cloud were present and eroded the metal of the suit's locks, exposing them to the Cloud and sealing them within. The crewmen retreated and headed to the clinic to get medical attention. Much to the displeasure of the attending Big Mountain physicians, they cut themselves out of the suits with Cosmic steak knives.

However, despite the problems, the ventilation system was eventually restored to barely functional order. When the War hit shortly afterward, it continued to work for a few more years, before finally giving up the ghost. The Cloud gradually seeped into the tunnels below the surface.
